The Month 3 Cliff: why most engagement platforms fail by week 12

A forensic look at the adoption curve that kills most engagement tools. And how seasonal design sidesteps it.

Deploy an engagement platform. Watch usage spike for six weeks. Watch it flatline by week 10. Watch it fall off a cliff at week 12.

You've just met the Month 3 Cliff — the single most common failure mode in HR-tech deployments. Here's why it happens and how to prevent it.

The psychology

Novelty is a drug. New platforms get a dopamine bump from being new. When the novelty fades, the platform has to earn its continued use — and most don't.

The fix: Seasons

A Season gives the platform a new story every 30–90 days. Leaderboards reset. Rewards refresh. A new team goal. A new cause to direct points to.

How to design a Season

  • **Pick one team goal** that matters this quarter.
  • **Frame the Season** around it — name, theme, visual identity.
  • **Reset leaderboards** at the start.
  • **Run for 60–90 days** — long enough for a story arc, short enough to stay fresh.
  • **Close with a finale** — celebration, data share, community impact report.
